Alabama announced that eight student-athletes have begun classes and will be eligible to participate in spring practice with the crimson tide in 2012.

Alabama junior offensive lineman Barrett Jones will be presented the Awards and Recognition Association Sportsmanship Award (ARA) during halftime of Thursday’s crimson tide basketball game against Vanderbilt at Coleman Coliseum, which begins at 6 p.m.

University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced Wednesday the hiring of Lance Thompson. Thompson returns to the UA staff after spending the last three seasons at Tennessee. As he did in 2007 and 2008, he will work on the defensive staff and coach the outside linebackers for the crimson tide.

Alabama junior cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and junior running back Trent Richardson announced Thursday that they will be entering the 2012 National Football League Draft. In addition, junior linebacker Dont’a Hightower has decided he will also declare for the draft.
